Don't waste your money on this vacuum, I have it and it has very little suction so doesn't "suck"! It is also loud and just sits and collects dust in my shop.

I actually like this and use it frequently. It's a dust buster, not a full on shop vac. Drywall dust kills the suction instantly. If the suction drops, bang out the filter and do it again.
It would be nice if power tool companies made a decent vacuum that is similar in capability to a Dyson handheld. It would be nice if Ridgid or Ryobi made a nice handheld that we can use all our batteries with that actually works well. It sounds like this is not it though.

I have this and absolutely love it.. I've used it for last 3years and it is rock solid.. just make sure you remember this is a handheld and costs like a 10th of what others cost so don't expect it to be something it's not.. 😉

There are two similar models of the Ridgid handhelds. The previous was meh and then this one which is not meh.
This new one is pretty good outside noise level and tested well on Project Farm.
Yours is either the previous model (still in some kits), clogged in the filter, or broken.

There are times a shop vac is just too much. This is where this tool comes in. Own this and use it with a brush for cleaning dust off of pc, keyboard, desktop, electronics, etc. It works perfect for that purpose. Move around freely without the burden of dragging that big thing behind by the hose.
Buy it for the battery and charger
I think mine is the older model. Someone posted HD might send that one. For that one, put me in the "this doesn't literally suck" column and in the "it figuratively sucks" column. It is barely enough to pick up dust, pine needles and little wood shavings. Taking a deep breath and blowing works almost as well. If all you want to do is light duty dust pick up this works, but the filter clogs quickly. And very noisy.
