Well, on that call, a guy answered and we proceeded to ask him if he was just talking with us. He was at his parent's house (we both lived at home until we married) and one of his friends was also there. He was not the guy we had gotten originally but they offered to come meet us. And the rest, as they say, is history.
We truly did have a connection from the very beginning. After meeting them and deciding they would call us to get together for a picnic and swimming on the weekend, they left and I told my friend if the one called who I connected with I would go but if the other one called me I would decline. Turned out she decided not to go either way and so it was just me and the one who would become my husband.
We were pretty much inseparable after that and were talking about marriage within a couple of weeks.
ETA: this all took place in Milwaukee, where we were both born and raised.

I do remember thinking it was funny the way my mom reacted when we did go on that first date. He was actually late picking me up so I figured he decided not to go since we were no longer double dating so I went to a church picnic. When he did show up I was gone and my mother told him where I was. He knew where the church was as he had a former girlfriend who lived on the same block as the church so he came to the church to pick me up and back we went to my house to get my swimsuit, etc. While I ran into the house and upstairs to my bedroom, I was 'horrified' to hear my mother calling to him out in his car to come in and then she grilled him about how to spell his last name, address, phone number, and who knows what else. So I guess she had some worries since this was the first guy I dated that I had not known previously.
So, after I got home, she told me how she looked all his info up in the telephone book (remember those?) to make sue he was 'legit'. Not sure what she planned to do if he was not.
Anyway, over the years we had some chuckles over that memory.
Hope you have a good weekend.

And just another observation/over thinking I've done since posting this is how long it is, at least for me, to live with another person for 51 years. Way longer than anyone else I've ever lived with. The next closest would be our son, and he lived with us just over 17 years. The only other people I ever lived with was my immediate family, and of my parents and three siblings, I lived with them for the following number of years: 7, 9, 11, 13, and 16. Interesting thing, at least to me, to think of. Then again, my mind works in strange ways, lol.
Have a good week.
